Enter The Fair
Half of the fair is competition, and most visitors never realise how open it is. Four routes in — one of them has no residency requirement at all, and two need no pre-registration.
Entry rules and deadlines change every year — confirm before you rely on anything here · Official exhibitor pages
2026 entries have closed
Open class livestock registration closed on 15 August 2026 and the GFF Youth Programme closed on 1 May 2026. This page is written as a planning reference for next year — the structure is stable from year to year even though the exact dates move. Farm & Garden and Household classes take walk-in entries during intake, so those may still be live; call the fair office on 301-663-5895 to check.
The four routes
Where you can enter
Eligibility is the thing that catches people out. One department is open to anyone, anywhere; two are restricted to Frederick County residents; the fourth is for young people through a club.
Route one
Open Class Livestock
Open to everyone — Frederick County residents and out-of-county entrants alike. This is unusual and worth knowing if you keep animals anywhere in the region.
Divisions cover dairy cattle, beef cattle, Texas longhorns, sheep, swine, dairy goats, Boer goats, poultry, draft horses and mules, and standardbreds.
How to enter: online through the ShoWorks system. 2026 deadline: 15 August at 11:59 p.m.
Route two
Farm & Garden
Frederick County residents only. Produce displays, grains, seeds, hay, garden fruit and vegetables, pomological entries including honey, apples, berries and wines, plus horticulture — cut flowers, arrangements and potted plants.
How to enter: no pre-registration required. You register and bring your items during the published intake dates ahead of the fair.
Route three
Household & Home Arts
Frederick County residents only. Baked goods, food preservation, quilts, clothing, needle arts, fine art and photography — plus dedicated children's classes for ages 10 and under and separate middle and high school divisions.
How to enter: again, no pre-registration. Deliver your items during the scheduled intake times.
Route four
Youth · ages 8 to 18
Through a Frederick County 4-H Club, a Frederick County FFA Chapter, or the fair's own GFF Youth Programme for young people who belong to neither.
Livestock, poultry and rabbits, performance and breeding animals, and market livestock projects.
2026 deadline: GFF Youth Programme registration closed 1 May.
If you're entering a young person
What the youth route actually involves
More than filling in a form. The youth programme is a year-long commitment with paperwork attached, and the paperwork is not optional.
Club membership first
You cannot enter youth classes as an individual. Membership of 4-H, FFA or the GFF Youth Programme comes first, and the GFF route has the earliest deadline of the three.
Project records
Species-specific project record submissions are required. These document the animal's care and cost across the year — start them when you start the project, not in August.
Codes of conduct
Exhibitors sign up to a Youth Code of Ethics and the fair's bullying and harassment policies. These are enforced, and breaches affect eligibility.
State requirements
Maryland Department of Agriculture fair requirements apply on top of the fair's own rules — health papers, testing and identification, depending on species.
Registration forms by species
Livestock registration and separate poultry and rabbit forms. Different animals, different paperwork, different timelines.
The sale at the end
Market projects can go through the Youth Livestock Sale on closing Saturday, which has its own rules and its own marketing expectations — see below.
Closing Saturday
The Youth Livestock Sale
The week ends with the animals young exhibitors have raised going to auction, with proceeds going back to the exhibitor. It is the emotional centre of the fair and the reason a lot of the agricultural programme exists at all.
Exhibitors are expected to do their own buyer outreach — the fair provides sale rules, sample buyer letters and marketing guidance, but finding buyers is the exhibitor's job. Families who start writing to local businesses in July do noticeably better than families who start in September.
Spectators are welcome and it costs nothing beyond gate admission. If you have never watched one, go.
Senior Fair Ambassadors
$1,000Each · up to four awarded
The fair's ambassador programme awards scholarships of up to $1,000 to as many as four Senior Fair Ambassadors.
Other scholarships
A Joe Free and GFF scholarship runs in some years, and a Farmers Co-op goat scholarship has been announced. Availability varies annually — check the official youth pages each spring rather than assuming last year's list.
Planning backwards
The year, in order
Exact dates move each year. The sequence does not.
-
Winter — pick the project
Market animals need to be acquired and started months before the fair. This is the decision that determines everything else.
-
Spring — club registration closes
The GFF Youth Programme closed on 1 May in 2026. If you are going the non-4-H, non-FFA route, this is the deadline that ends your year if you miss it.
-
Summer — buyer outreach begins
For market projects heading to the sale, start contacting potential buyers well before the fair. Late letters get polite declines.
-
Mid-August — open class entries close
ShoWorks closed at 11:59 p.m. on 15 August in 2026. Livestock entries are done online and the cut-off is firm.
-
Days before — intake for halls
Farm & Garden and Household entries are physically delivered during published intake windows. No form needed, but the window is narrow.
-
18–26 September — the fair
Judging runs across all nine days by department. The Youth Livestock Sale is on the closing Saturday.
-
Sunday 27 September — release
Animals and exhibits come home. Not a public fair day.
Get the premium book
Every department publishes its own rules document with class lists, premium amounts and specific requirements. Those documents are the authority on what you can enter and what it pays — this page is an orientation, not a rulebook. The fair office answers exhibitor questions on 301-663-5895.
Selling rather than showing?
Food and commercial vendor space works on an entirely different timeline.
